Running analyses

When running analyses, you can start without entering any constraints, accepting the default parameters

Then remove the constraint 'Restrict selection to same industry' by clicking on the 'No' radio button. This is the first important trade-off, weighing increased expectations against reduced diversification

Then impose one constraint at a time observing the impact on expectations and beta. It may be well and good to have a high expectation, but are you really comfortable with the resultant beta (volatility)? You can test the result of gradually reducing the beta ceiling slowly eliminating the highest beta stocks in the proposed portfolio and examining the impact on the resultant expectations

Similarly, if you are using margin in your brokerage account (borrowing funds, secured by the stocks in your portfolio), keep in mind that brokerages normally limit the extension of margin on very low priced stocks. You may therefore wish to screen out low-priced issues in the proposed portfolio by specifying a lowest value in 'Price hurdle', then slowly increasing that value in new analyses while examining the consequences. Consult your brokerage firm for the details on their margin policy

Low-priced issues also tend to be more volatile, and you may observe a decrease in the beta of the proposed portfolio as you screen out low-priced issues

You may also not be comfortable accepting some of the higher priced issues proposed for the portfolio. You can similarly test the consequences of limiting the price you are willing to pay for shares

Take the time to review the comments. They will try to highlight issues that the selection tool has identified based on the various choices you have made. Be sure the situation described appropriately reflects the choices you have in mind and that you are comfortable with the resultant selection. If not, modify constraints as appropriate and re-run the analysis

There is no additional charge regardless of the number of RANK analyses that are run during a session provided you make no additions to the stocks listed in the current portfolio and you are using the same day's market data. Updated files are available after 10pm. A separate charge is made for each SELECT analysis
